Report

* It has been reported that fully cellular container ship, CMA CGM PETRA (IMO: 9977701) experienced a fire in a cargo hold whilst in a position approximately 45 nautical miles north west of Penang, Malaysia on 23 August 2026.

* It was reported that the fire was initially contained by the crew but that professional salvors were required to assist with firefighting and salvage operations.

* The vessel subsequently moved to Port Klang, Malaysia where approximately 450 containers are to be discharged for inspection.

* It is understood that General Average is very likely to be declared by the shipowner and that General Average Adjusters have already been retained. If, as expected, General Average is declared, General Average security will be required from all Cargo Interests prior to the delivery of their cargo. We will be available to assist with the provision of such security and we would encourage clients and cargo interested parties to make early contact with us in this respect.

* We are retaining a fire expert to investigate the cause of the fire and also have cargo surveyors on hand to effect cargo surveys at Port Klang, as required.

* We strongly recommend that you advise us, as a matter of urgency, should you be concerned with any cargo stowed on board the vessel so that we can immediately start taking steps to protect your interests.
